About

Context

Healthcare systems are increasingly dependent on digital infrastructures for clinical records, prescriptions, diagnosis and care coordination. While this digital transformation has brought major operational benefits, it has also significantly increased exposure to cyberattacks, particularly ransomware.

Rescueware was created in response to this growing threat. The project aims to develop a new approach to ransomware protection and recovery, especially for critical environments where service continuity and rapid access to information are essential. In hospitals, system unavailability can lead to cancelled appointments, delayed surgeries, interrupted e-prescriptions and limited access to exams and clinical data.

The challenge

Ransomware attacks typically compromise systems and encrypt stored data, blocking access until a ransom is paid in exchange for the decryption key. These attacks often cause prolonged service disruption and major financial losses, whether through ransom payments or through complex recovery processes carried out without payment.

In recent years, ransomware attacks have increased significantly, particularly in critical sectors such as healthcare. This trend highlights the limitations of many current protection and detection solutions, which often struggle to keep pace with increasingly sophisticated attack methods and evasion techniques.

What Rescueware will do

Rescueware explores new approaches to ransomware protection, detection and recovery. The project is designed not only to improve the ability to detect ransomware attacks, but also to ensure that data can be restored to previous versions even when an attack succeeds. This is particularly important in environments handling sensitive information, such as hospitals and other healthcare providers.

Objectives

Rescueware focuses on three key objectives:

Ransomware Protection

Explore different ransomware protection and detection solutions.

Version Recovery

Design a transparent storage system solution capable of fully restoring data to previous versions, especially for sensitive data.

Operational Continuity

Reduce service downtime and improve operational continuity.
